The WLI was founded in response to a perceived British threat in June 1807. In July, several young men of Charleston met at Robinson’s Hotel and formed the Washington Light Infantry using the first President’s birthday of Feb. 22, 1807 as the unit’s formation date to honor Washington. Over the years the WLI became Charleston’s top militia group, its members performing many civic duties as well as military ones.

The WLI increased its recruiting efforts during the years of 1860-1. When the War broke out the WLI became part of the 25th SC Regiment (Eutaw Battalion) in Feb. 1862 serving with high distinction in the Charleston area (Secessionville, James Island, Battery Wagner and Fort Sumter) and in Petersburg VA and Fort Fisher NC.
